Toby pepper shaker
Beautiful Toby pepper shaker. Very rare collector's item from the 19th century. Provenance: Ghentian private collection.
A Toby jug or Philpot (Fillpot) is a pottery jug in the form of a person. Typically the figure is a heavy-set, jovial man holding a mug of beer in one hand and a pipe in the other and wearing 18th century attire: a long coat and a tricorn hat. The original toby jug was developed by Staffordshire potters in the 1760s.
Etymology: There are competing theories. One is that it was named after the intoxicated jovial character of Sir Toby Belch in a play of Shakespeare (Twelfth Night). Another is that it was named after a notorious drinker.
