Set of 3 Chinese snuff bottles (20th Century) made in blue and white cameo glass or carved overlay glass, with mountains and cranes.
1. H 7,5 cm W 3,5 cm. with a red cap made of glass.
2. H 6,5 cm W 4 cm
3. H 6,2 cm W 4,2 cm. With a green cap made of glass.
Cameo glass is produced by engraving or etching and carving trough fused layers of differently colored glass to produce designs. The designs usually feature white opaque glass motifs on a dark-colored background. Here it is the other way around: the mountains, cranes and the bat are blue on a white opaque background.
The technique was first used in ancient Roman art. From the mid-19th there was a revival in the French Art Nouveau.

Conceived as precious containers for ground tobacco imported into China, snuff bottles replaced the snuff boxes used by Europeans. The Chinese considered snuff to be a remedy for colds, headaches and stomach disorders.
Snuff bottles were/are made of many materials such as porcelain, jade, ivory, wood, coconut shells, lapis lazuli, chalcedony, jasper, malachite, quartz, turquoise, agate, mother-of-pearl, ceramic, tortoiseshell ... .
