2 small malachite cones, 20th century

Malachite is a mineral used as a gemstone. The name comes from the Greek. The mineral was given this name due to its resemblance to the leaves of the mallow plant. In Egypt, cameos, amulets and ornaments were made from it. In ancient Egypt the colour green was associated with death and the power of ressurrection as well as new life and fertility. Ancient Egyptians believed that the afterlife contained an eternal paradise, referred to as the "Field of Malachite", which resembled their lives but with no pain and suffering. The Greeks and Romans also knew malachite. The pulverised mineral was used as make-up and as a dye for paint. It was claimed that malachite could protect children against witchcraft and sorcery. In ancient times it was thought to cure eye diseases. In the 16th century, it was used in Central Europe to promote children's growth and to relieve pain.

The intriguing green of the malachite has the power to light up your interior.

Do not place malachite in bright sunlight, it may cause loss of colour!
